Swap the rear speakers first and see how you find that before mucking about with a sub. My bass level is on -1 to keep the sound balanced, when listening to CDs. I'm not really a bass junkie at all but i was very impressed by the bass levels and general improvement in sound from just an easy £65 upgrade. I swapped my rear speakers for some Kickers and the bass was markedly improved. I might also put some sort of sound-deadening into the back enclosures too as recommended by other members posts. And I don't want to use any space other than the space where the current sub is. I will be keeping the Bose headunit for the moment as I have iPod integration and don't want to replace it just yet. I am not after massive earth-shaking bass which will wake up the neighbours, just some decent-ish sub-bass for a better sound.

However, I was wondering if there is an easy swap option for the subwoofer which I also think sucks (barely seems to do anything). I have just been reading all the threads on replacing the stock front/rear speakers which I will be doing soon as the standard ones suck. Is it possible or worth replacing the Bose sub (free-air sub?) for another aftermarket one just using the current cabling? Or do you really need to put an active sub or amped/enclosed sub back there to make it worthwhile? (I know the stock headunit has no subwoofer control, only bass/treble so may be a bit pointless?).
